The 48th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM48) and the 28th Committee for Environmental Protection (CEP28) were held in the historic and globally renowned Peace City of Hiroshima, Japan, from 11–21 May 2026. The meetings brought together Antarctic Treaty nations to deliberate on key issues related to governance, environmental protection, scientific cooperation, policy frameworks, and stewardship of Antarctica — a continent dedicated to peace and science.
The Indian Delegation was led by Dr. Thamban Meloth, Director, NCPOR, and joined by Dr. Vandana Chaudhary from the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Shri K.S. Mohamed Hussain from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), and Dr. Rahul Mohan, Dr. C.M. Laluraj, and Dr. Anoop Tiwari from NCPOR, Goa.
India actively contributed to discussions at ATCM48–CEP28 focused on strengthening international cooperation in Antarctica and advancing science-based environmental management and conservation, reaffirming the nation’s commitment to Antarctic science and the objectives of the Antarctic Treaty System.
