Relatively high antibiotic resistance among Arctic bacteria

Arctic environment is considered as one of the relatively unpolluted environments in the world. Inhospitable living conditions in the Polar Regions limits the anthropogenic activity to a minimum and the negative environmental impacts are negligible. However, unlike terrestrial environments, oceanic environments are connected via oceaniccurrent system or conveyor belts, which distribute materials, microorganisms and temperature from the tropics to polar oceans. In this pretext, Indian scientists studied the prevalence of antibiotic resistance among Arctic heterotrophic bacteria and coliform bacteria from water and sediment samples. Their study revealed that high level of resistance against diversity of antibiotics in the Arctic aerobic heterotrophic bacteria. For more details please refer to the link below.
